Zach and the neighbors have been busy trying to dig tunnels in the sandy ground near our house.  Its dirty work, but somebody has got to do it! We live on the Nam Un reservoir, built in 1967.  This reservoir displaced many of the B. people who moved to the village of Khok Sa-at.  The reservoir is not very deep and there are still many trees just below the surface.  Many acres of rice paddies use this reservoir to irrigate their rice crops.
Dear family and friends,

The highlight of the month of April is the Thai holiday of Songkran.  It is a Buddhist holiday where people bless each other by pouring water over each other or putting powder on each others faces.  Pick-up trucks full of people drive around with big barrels of water in the back so that those riding can sling buckets of water on people.  But people on the road are prepared with their own buckets of water and give the drive-by water-throwers a taste of their own medicine.

We enjoyed the ongoing water fight.  But after a day, it gets a bit boring.  This holiday lasts for three days and there is plenty of drinking and partying that goes on.  It is a dangerous time to drive as there are many drunk drivers on the roads and quite a number of fatal traffic accidents.

We have found that drinking is a big part of life here.  Everywhere Tom goes, he is offered "good Thai whisky." There are many beer bottles all over the place.  The kids have been using them to help in their excavation work.

Excavation work is thirsty business! But two bottles of beer seem a bit much for a 6 year old.  Not to worry, they are used to bring water to the excavation sight to loosen up the sandy ground.
